Honoring Veterans With Our Actions
If your inbox and social media feeds are anything like mine, you’re probably overloaded with news from the U.S. midterm elections. There’s a lot to talk about!
Despite all of the political commentary about what democracy should or could look like, it is the sacrifices remembered at the end of the week that speak the loudest to the value of democracy here in the U.S.
As we celebrate Veterans Day this weekend, let’s be sure to honor our active duty service members and veterans with our actions.
Does your family have any traditions that honor veterans? Do you visit a certain monument or museum, watch any specific films, read any historic speeches or poems? Let us know in the comments, or tag us in a story on Instagram.
Stay educated on the issues that matter to veterans.
How do veterans contribute to our communities? What should be included in veterans’ benefits? What care are we providing for veterans facing physical and mental health challenges? Mission Roll Call does a fantastic job compiling research, polls, veteran stories, and direct links to other resources related to these issues and more.
Are any of your friends or family members veterans? Have you called to check in lately? Do you know the issues that matter most to them?
Support groups that are offering practical assistance.
There are so many veterans organizations doing honorable work. The Gary Sinise Foundation constructs specially adapted smart homes for wounded veterans, facilitates innovative and respectful mental wellness evaluations, hosts workshops and educational opportunities, and offers practical assistance in many other ways.
K9s for Warriors is combatting veteran suicide by providing highly-trained service dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, or other trauma. The majority of the dogs come from high-kill rescue shelters.
Do you know of any other organizations that are championing veteran voices and providing practical assistance to veterans and their families?
Maximize meaningful screen time.
If you’re taking your weekend at a slower pace, consider watching a movie or two that will spark thoughtful conversations with your family and friends. I love how American Sniper honors leadership and perseverance while respectfully handling the very real struggles our veterans face once they return to civilian life. Or how a regular Midwest town rallies together in Honor Flight to show respect for their community’s World War II veterans, sending them on a trip to see the memorials built in their honor. Netflix recently released the German film All Quiet on the Western Front which dramatizes the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918, that ended WWI. We now celebrate that anniversary as Veterans Day.
What are a few films you think respectfully share the veteran experience? What stories inspire you to honor veterans?
This weekend is an excellent opportunity to rest, spend time with family, and enjoy the freedoms we have in the United States. But it is also a special weekend where we can show intentional, active appreciation for the veterans who have sacrificed so much to defend our liberties. Consider thanking them for their service with your actions.
