It is worth remembering the stand by Senator Margaret Chase Smith, one of the few Republicans to oppose Joe McCarthy in the early 1950’s. In a speech to the Senate in 1951, denouncing McCarthy she advocated a ‘Declaration of Conscience’ incorporating the following principles;-

• The right to criticize;

• The right to hold unpopular beliefs;

• The right to protest;

• The right of independent thought.

It is worth reading that speech in full. With maybe, a slight update to include, ‘The right to offend’ it is very applicable today,
